S. Maria Novella: new location for statue of Blessed John of Salerno

statua beato santa maria novellaNew location, always in the Museum of Santa Maria Novella, for the large stone sculpture depicting the Blessed John of Salerno, founder and first prior of the Dominican convent in Florence.

The ticket was positioned in the exit lane of the Green Cloister, now integrated in the visit of the monumental complex.

The methods to transfer, very complex operation because of the size and delicacy of the artefact, but also by the lack of space to maneuver and gates, have been studied by the Department of Culture – Municipal Museums Service who also performed the operation.

The decision to place the statue at the exit lane of the Green Cloister meets two requirements: ensure a better solution exhibition of the work and create the conditions necessary to implement the final phase of the project. The objective is to return the work to its original context, the Great Cloister, when you realize the legal conditions that will enable the achievement.

The removal of the statue has also made it possible to proceed with the restructuring and adjustment of the Ticket Museum, according to the plan formulated by the Directorate Technical Services – Service and Fine Arts Factory Palazzo Vecchio, currently in progress and conclusion of imminent.

At Scultura, performed around the 1735 by Jerome Ticciati and originally placed in the center of the Great Cloister of Santa Maria Novella, had been removed from its primary site in the twenties of the twentieth century.
